CHARLOTTE FARRANT EMBROIDERY
About
Embracing her passion for innovation, Charlotte Farrant looks to the unexpected to form the basis of her practice. Charlotte is passionate about creating intellectual qualities within her work and moving embroidery away from the perceived idealism it has gained throughout history. A hand embroidery artist graduating from the Royal School of Needlework with a first class degree, she has created the award winning ‘The Codification of Stitch’, a classification method for stitch, resulting in a code which can be used within embroidery. creating hidden messages represented through the stitches used within a piece of work. Through The Codification of Stitch, Charlotte represents a historical or modern-day pioneer through her embroidery designs, believing that the garment and embellishment (embroidery) are intrinsically linked – they rely on each other to enable a true storytelling narrative.
A deep rooted fascination with code comes from her love of mechanics growing up - with a planned career in mechanical engineering before she found her passion for embroidery. Not wanting to lose this fascination, she has taken inspiration from her passions in her development of ‘The Codification of Stitch’, evolving the algorithmic methodology of mechanics into an art form. This coded process can be replicated across future projects creating different results with every coded message. Combining specialist techniques such as Goldwork, Whitework, Blackwork, and Raised Work to create texture and interest in her work. Charlotte is passionate about unearthing ‘forgotten’ pioneers of history, highlighting their work through a self-expressive garment alluding to their wondrous achievements.
